The Basic HTML Document

Well, here you are! Getting ready to start your web page.  You have seen the "word?" HTML. What is HTML?  I guess, the only thing you really need to know about what HTML is right now, is that it stands for a language, Hyper Text Markup Language. I am sure right now all you want to do is get your site up and running and this knowledge really does not help do that. So let's get started!

That is what you have to have to make a page work. If you don't have one of those elements, you will run into trouble previewing and saving your pages.  The next thing I always try to stress is this...maybe you have the mega computer...the one no one can match...the best, fastest, newest computer that will ever be available. Well, that is great! What you need to remember when you build a page is that not all of us out here have that. We have our old 8086's that just barely dial a number to connect let alone load a page 4 meg long.

The point:
Please try to keep it down on the graphics files per page. If you have a lot of graphics you just have to use, break up the pages. In other words, spread the graphics through your site, don't try to get them all on one page. The idea is to get people to come to your page and keep coming. If the page takes two days to load, it kind of cuts down on how many times a person can visit. Okay, done with that!

This is what a bad page looks like in my opinion. Things are just spread all over the page without any real purpose.

First of all with all those large graphics strewn around....the page would take forever to load. They are literally strewn on the page...not arranged in some visually pleasing order.

There really is not any room for any really meaningful content, and if you could get some on there, viewers would be distracted by the graphics and really not get all the content.

Don't get me wrong, graphics are a great addition to any web site and convey a message all their own. They just need to be kept in control. You need to control them, not let them
control you.
Good Example of a page!!!

This is a good example of a page. It is visually appealing to begin with, there are not too many graphics to make load time too slow, just a basic all around good design.

The next thing I want to mention is about your backgrounds. They are great! But, when you design a site, you might think about a background that would either work for the whole site, or one for each section of the site. The more backgrounds a browser has to load as people move through you site the longer is takes pages to load. Once a background is stored in RAM it is there for the browser to use
continually. Backgrounds are like graphics, they take time to load.
