WS_FTP Pro OverView

I picked up my copy of WS_FTP Pro at Tucows, http://www.tucows.com

It is not free, but it IS wonderful!

Once you have WS_FTP Pro downloaded and installed, you will need to set it up to FTP to your server, for our purposes we will use GeoCities. If you scroll down and look at Fig 5. you will see the screen that comes up when you double click on the WS_FTP Pro icon. Each computer terminal represents a server. To add a site to your WS_FTP Pro directory you can click on the file menu and then "add a site". You will add GeoCities as the "Site Name:". You can then enter the properties for GeoCities. As you can see in Fig 1. the "Host name/Address" is ftp.geocities.com. The "host type" is automatic detect. You are done with this tab, now you will want to click on the login tag.

Enter your username and password and confirm your password. Check the save password box so you don't have to enter this information every time you want to log on. The next tab I used was preferences. This may be a default, you can check it and see. You can check your tabs and compare them with mine for Fig's 3 and 4.

As stated above this is the first screen that comes up when you double click on the WS_FTP Pro icon. This lists all the servers that you may have sites on. The WS_FTP Pro program has lots of them there here already when you install it.

Once you double click on the server you want to access, the next screen will come up. Fig 6. shows the files and your directories at the server you are accessing.

Fig 7. shows my Explorer tree for my web site pages located on my hard drive.  So you will open WS_FTP Pro, then double click on GeoCities, once it has connnected and your files and directories are showing, you will open up Explorer and open the folder that has the files in it that you want to upload. You may have to adjust the screens on your desktop so that you can work better.

Here is the great part. To upload files from your hard drive to GeoCities, drag and drop a file from your Explorer window to the directory that you want the file to be uploaded to. For instance, I have "notepad.html" highlighted. I have a folder at GeoCities named "tutorials". Since I want the "notepad.html" file to be uploaded to the tutorials folder, I will drag the "notepad.html" file and drop it on the "tutorials" folder. It takes a few seconds for the transfer to start, and then
does not take long for it to be completed. This will of course all depend on how large the files are that you are uploading. Once the transfer is complete, you can transfer another file or you can disconnect. To disconnet, click on the file menu, and then disconnect. That will clear the screen of your GeoCities directory.  You can then click on the "x" in the upper right hand corner of that window to close it. You can close WS_FTP Pro in the same manner and then your
Explorer window. Your transfer is complete.

You can now go visit your page.
