Paint Shop Pro 7 - Custom Shading

There are times when the auto shadows and shading just don't cut it and you want something just a little different. With Paint Shop Pro 7 creating your own shading is quick and easy allowing you to create some terrific effects.

  For a simply shade effect:

Create a new layer and draw a shape on it.

From the layers palette right click on the layer your shape is on and check the box next to Lock Layer. This will stop any painting on the transparent part of the layer. The only place that will accept pixels will be the colored areas.

Select the Spray Can tool.

Set your foreground color to black.

In the Tool Palette set the Opacity to 3, the size to 20.

Run the spray can along the edges of your shape. For a circle to produce a "shadowed area" you simply spray one half of the circles edge as below in a crescent shape.

Now let's do something a little more complex. Along with the shading we'll add a little highlight.

On a new layer create a star shape from the Preset Shapes palette.

Turn down the size of the Spray Can Tool to 10.

Be sure your foreground color is still black.

Carefully follow all the edges of the star.

Now change your foreground color to white and carefully spray in the center of the spikes of the star. It should take only one stroke for each spike.

Below you can see that I did the text the same as the star with the exception that I added a drop shadow.

For the gold effect you follow the same instructions as above until you get to using the white color.

Instead of white pick a bright yellow color.

With the Spray Can tool stroke through the centers of each letter.

Then using white as the foreground color carefully go back over where you just put the bright yellow.

Silver text could be created using a gray color for the original text and using white for the highlight.

Custom buttons would be easy to make using this technique.
