Give up! Make Adjustments!

Probably more than any other Internet writer, I shout the benefits of Never Giving Up! "Don't give up promoting your business," I tell you. Success is probably just around the corner once your ads have had time to sink in with your best prospects and customers.

But what do you do when you've tried and tried, spent all the grocery money on ads for months, and nothing is working?

Give up. Make adjustments. Try again.

This is the 1-2-3 method that successful entrepreneurs use everywhere to market their businesses. That is why they put so much emphasis on testing their advertising and tracking their results.

Savvy marketers want to know when advertising isn't working. After an ad strategy has had plenty of time to do it's job, and STILL isn't working: They give up. Make adjustments. And try again.

Seem BIGGER Than You Are

In this age of mega-corporations, many shoppers feel bigger is better. Looking BIG is easy on the Internet. And it doesn't cost you much more than looking small.

When Walmart wants to look big, they spend millions on acres of brick, mortar, and prime commercial real estate.

You can look larger than you are online with these simple tips that cost you almost nothing:

*Use different email addresses for different departments in your business. Order@yoursite.com, CEO@yoursite.com, and customer_service@yoursite.com can all be routed to you.

*Expand your products and services by offering things sold by other businesses. Put your main items up front with other peoples' good things on secondary pages. This makes your business look bigger.

*Spend a couple hundred bucks on a web site logo by a good, professional designer (I've used Barry at MagicCamera.com with excellent results).

*Create cooperative deals with other online entrepreneurs who can work as your associates. Several virtual "partners" can often do the work of much more expensive employees.

Working With Virtual Partners

I touched on this idea in a previous tip. It is one of the most powerful strategies on the Internet and deserves a bit more discussion.

If you need more help running your Internet business, or the online side of your offline biz, consider getting a virtual partner. These are capable people who excel in some area of online business and work on a contract basis, for a cut of sales, or for the referrals they can get for their own businesses.

Virtual partners can often be the solution to a real problem: not having enough time to run your business. (Keep in mind these are virtual partners, not traditional partners who own a share of your firm).

I no longer have time to design web sites for people, yet many of my customers want me to write the copy for their site. I have developed virtual partnerships with several very capable designers who take my copy and whip it up into a flashy web page. Customers are delighted with great work that I wouldn't have been able to give them without virtual partners.

Think of ways you can incorporate talented folks in your business on a contract or commission basis.

Include a P.S., P.S.S., even a P.S.S.S.

The next time you get a sales letter in the mail (what many of us call junk mail), check for the P.S. Almost all sales letters have one, or two, or even three P.S.'s.

Why? Studies show that most people read the P.S. BEFORE they read the rest of the letter. It is a good place to state your main offer. You can include a second and third P.S. in hard-selling letters to business opportunity seekers, sweepstakes players, and others who appreciate enthusiasm Have your secondary P.S.'s include your main bonuses or time limit.

For example:

P.S.: Don't miss YOUR chance to get the Widget 2000 for 40% off.

P.S.S.: This incredible offer expires September 15th!

P.S.S.: Call now 800-555-1212 and get a FREE BONUS!

People don't read web pages from bottom to top normally, so the P.S. at the end doesn't have the same impact online. Still, many top copy writers include them. Buyers associate a P.S. with a key goodie they don't want to miss. You can use web site P.S.'s to offer additional bonuses that drive home the sale.
